News from Mr. Hostetler, our Principal

We are off to a great start. The staff at MES is doing an amazing job welcoming students and preparing for the year ahead. I enjoy walking through the classrooms to see what the students are learning. I also enjoy getting to know the students at lunch and recess. Just a couple of reminders so we can have the most successful year possible.
  • Visitors - if you want to visit or volunteer, you must complete and pass a limited criminal history background check. Background checks are good for two years. When you come to the school, you will need your ID to check in to our visitor management system.
  • School begins at 7:40 (8:05 on Wednesdays). It is important that your child arrives to class on time. Students are allowed to enter the building at 7:25 (7:50 on Wednesday). Please do not drop off students before there is a staff member present.
  • Drop off and pickup - If your student is a car rider, please remain in the lane of traffic and do not go around while others in front of you are still loading/unloading. This is a safety issue, and our number one goal is to keep all students safe.
  • Make sure to call the office at 574-825-2158 before 8:30 if your child is going to be late or absent. If we do not hear from you, you will be contacted through Parent Square.
  • If you need to change transportation arrangements in the afternoon, please call the school before 1:30
If you have any questions at any time, don't hesitate to call the school at 574-825-2158.

News from Mr. Peery, our School Counselor

Blessings In A Backpack Program

MES will work with the Blessings In A Backpack program again this year. Blessings In A Backpack is an organization that provides extra food for students to take home with them on Fridays to help provide for them over the weekend. Items are usually fairly easy to make and "kid-friendly." If your student has already participated in Blessings In A Backpack last year, they will automatically be signed up for this year.

Participation is FREE, and there is no qualification process; all you have to do is ask to be signed up. If you are interested in this program for your child, please contact Mr. Peery through ParentSquare or at peeryb@mcsin-k12.org.

News from Mrs. Gleim, our Nurse

The mobile dentist will be visiting Middlebury Elementary soon!. This convenient service is available to all students. They accept private insurance, Medicaid, self-pay, and grant assistance is available. Services offered include x-rays, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and even simple restorative treatments. Everyone received a sign-up form in their gray Back to School folder. If you need another copy, please contact the school or you can register your student online.

Please keep a seasonally appropriate change of clothes in your child's backpack. Accidents happen; there can be spills in the cafeteria, and the playground can be wet and muddy. The clinic is running low on several sizes (especially bottoms) and may not have clothes to share.

Middlebury Schools is always looking for substitute nurses! If you or someone you know is interested, I would love to talk with you!

ATTENTION - NEW PICKUP POLICY

When you come to pick up your student from the office, we will now need to scan your identification (driver's license, ID card, etc.).

Picture Day

Picture packets will be sent home for ordering, but if you prefer, you can order online at the link below. This link will become active two (2) weeks prior to picture day and will remain available 24 hours after picture day. Our online order code is 1927OORQKCJWUP.

Background Checks

To better protect the safety of our students, Middlebury schools changed our policy on background checks. There was a letter explaining this new process in everyone's grey registration folder. The standard free background check will still apply to most visits or volunteer opportunities. However, if you would like to chaperone field trips, you will now need a higher level of screening, which has a $5.00 fee. Background checks are good for two years and are valid for all schools in the district. If you have done a level 1 check and want to do a level 2 check, please call the office first so we can cancel the level 1 check. Due to the nature of the new screening process, ALL background checks need to be filled out online. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping keep the safety of our students a top priority. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Physical Education News from Mrs. Frey

Welcome Back! I'm excited to see everyone again. Just a reminder, please make sure that your child has a pair of shoes he/she can leave at school for PE. We want your child to be able to participate in class, and wearing boots, dress shoes, sandals, flip-flops, etc., may prohibit that. We also need to take care of our gym floor. No black-soled shoes, please. If you need assistance with gym shoes, please contact the school nurse or me. We would be happy to help. Thank you!

Afternoon Transportation Changes

If you need to change how your child will be going home (for example, being picked up instead of riding the bus), please send a note in your child's backpack or contact the office as soon as possible during the day. The office can get very busy towards the end of the day - especially the first few days of school - and the earlier we know the better. Thank you!

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to be in school except in cases of emergency, illness, or school-approved absences. Parents should call the school office on the day a student is absent (825-2158). The school will call home if no parent contact is made by 8:30 AM. A doctor's statement may be required for an extended illness. If your child cannot go out for recess, he/she must bring a doctor's note stating the reason for being excused. Extended absences from P.E. will require a doctor's statement.
